Adobe Acrobat 8.1.1 Standard No pdf printer driver is installed

Adobe Acrobat 8.1.1 Standard
Windows Vista (was upgraded from XP)
Office 2007

No pdf printer driver is installed. When I print from an Office 2007 saving as adobe pdf I get the following error message:

“PDFMaker cannot locate the Adobe PDF Printer’s printer driver. Please re-install Adobe Acrobat 8.0.”

The printer driver is in fact NOT installed. I look at the system printers and there is no PDF printer driver.
I have re-installed several times. I called support and they won’t help me because I purchased a volume license and it will cost me $40 to get support.

I have searched user groups and Adobe knowledge bases to no avail.

I have tried to install the driver myself with the .inf files located in the dir “C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 8.0\Acrobat\Xtras\AdobePDF” there are the following .inf files. None of them will install when I try to add a printer and select have disk and select any of them.
AdobePDF.inf AdobePDFCT.inf AdobePDFK.inf
AdobePDFCS.inf AdobePDFJ.inf
I get the following error:

"Printer driver was not installed. Unable to find a core driver package that is required by the printer driver package."

The msi installer has created two printer ports “Documents/*.pdf (Adobe PDF port)”, and “Desktop/*.pdf (Adobe PDF port)

I have tried Uninstalled and reinstalled several times. I have also tried repair several times

Can anyone help please???

Thanks

I have the exact same problem. My Vista PC came with Acrobat 8 Standard. I had previously purchased Acrobat 8 Pro and used it on XP. When I installed Pro on Vista everything looked good ... but no PDF printer and converting word files fails. Ugh.

Maybe you should tried this steps of mine over here:
1. Type "C:\Windows\inf" into the search box on the start menu.
2. Locate the INFCACHE.1 file and right-click it and select Properties.
3. On the INFCACHE.1 Properties window tab to the "Security" tab and click the "Edit" button to change permissions on this file.
4. On the Permissions for INFCACHE.1 window click the "Add" button.
5. On the Select Users or Groups window click the "Advanced" button.
6. A new Select Users or Groups window will open and then click the "Find Now" button.
7. The search results are sorted alphabetically; locate the username you logon to Windows with and then double-click.
8. Under the "Enter the objects names to select..." you should see something like this YOURCOMPUTERNAME\Yourusername
9. Now click the OK button.
10. You will now return to the Permissions for INFCACHE.1 window.
11. Under the Permissions for Yourusername you need to tick "Full Control" under the Allow column. Click the "Apply" button and then the "OK" button.
12. You will be prompted with a "Windows Security" window, just click the "Yes" button and continue.
13. Delete the INFCACHE.1 file.
14. Restart your computer.
15. Open Adobe Acrobat 8.1
16. Locate the “Help” menu item and click “Repair Acrobat Installation”
17. Restart if requested to do so.

This fix worked on Windows Vista Business Edition (32-Bit and or 64bit).

Steve Lionel - 4:50pm May 16, 08 PST (#25 of 27) Edited: 16-May-2008 at 04:54pm

I have 32-bit Vista Ultimate and Acrobat 8.1.2 - no PDF printer. The method described in this thread did not work for me. But here's what did work.

# Open Control Panel, select Printers
# Click Add a Printer
# Click Add a local printer
# Select Use an existing port (should be preselected), change the port to "Desktop \*.pdf (Adobe PDF Port), click Next
# On the next page, click Have Disk...
# Click Browse and browse to C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 8.0\Acrobat\Xtras\AdobePDF (or wherever you have Acrobat installed), click OK.
# It should now show a series of "Adobe PDF Converter" entries. Select the first one and click Next
# Change the printer name if desired, uncheck the box to use it as a default printer, click Next
# Do not print a test page, click Finish
# Find your new printer in Printers. Right click on it and select Properties, Advanced
# Click "Print directly to the printer", click OK

You're in business.

I have tried all the methods above and nothing has worked for me. I am using a Vista 32 Bit Enterprise and have a Adobe Pro 8.1

After following Steve's instructions I get the error message that "Printer Driver was not Installed. Unable to find a Core Driver Package that is required by the Printer Driver Package"

:(

fantastic ! Thanks so much, Steve.
It works perfectly when I print from the main menu - and it doesn't work with the adobe icon shortcut, but hey ... who cares : )

This also works for WinSP3 with Acrobt 9 extended. The only additonal thing I had to do was to download the Adobe Universal PostScript Windows Driver Installer 1.0.6 from the Adobe site and install it FIRST. The pdf printer installation INSISTED on finding the PSCRIPT.HLP file to complete the installation. SO, the modified instructions for my case is:

First, search for the file PSCRIPT.HLP
It should be in the C:\WINDOWS\system32\spool\drivers\w32x86\3 folder
If it is NOT, install the Adobe Universal PostScript Driver FIRST by downloading from the adobe site.

THEN DO THE FOLLOWING:

Thanks Steve... That worked for me too. You seem to bypass the spooling problem that Adobe discusses on their website.

Ok, I have windows xp, office 2003 and just upgraded to adobe creative suite 3 web premium which has adobe professional 8 on it. My adobe printer is gone, none of the pdf icons work and even worse, if I open up the pro 8 program, I can't even pdf in that program. I get the error unable to fine "Adobe PDF" resource file, do you want to run the installer in repair mode. Then I get another screen telling me the doc is not formatted correctly or is corupt and can not save.

Please help, I've read every form. I really need Pro 8 to work as I combine multiple files for pdf for web, etc.

I tried to use Steve's method, but as I am using Windows 7, the port options are pre-selected and I cannot write in a new one. Any advice???

Anonymous said...

same problem as heather, windows 7 and no way to change a preselected port. My choice is now an asthetically inferior one and i installed two a printer for word-docs to pdf (PDF Creator) and another little programme to print a series of .jpgs as .pdf (jpg to PODF v3.4)
not elegant, but it works.

I have Windows 7 32-bit and Adobe Acrobat 8.0 (with updates). I have tried Steve's suggestion. Although I was unable to change port, it did find XPS Printer Driver port. However, I am still having the same problem. Anyone figure this one out yet? Adobe's website has no support on this problem
